5 Years
"Do you want to go for a walk?" He asked me and I hesitated. "Are you sure it's ok?" I responded, in kind, with a question. "Yes" he awkwardly settled the debate.
In the months leading up to this collide of two lives, he and I had been spending a lot of time together and I had just recently endured a check-up by my roommates. They were really looking out for my heart and it only hastened a conversation he and I needed to have. I felt this was too large a decision to make on my own because I didn't want to date another person's husband, so, if Gerard really wanted ME, he'd be willing to jump through one hoop: our pastor. I think that phone call lasted all of 5 minutes with one question, "What are your intentions?" Which really, was my question, I just couldn't formulate it into words.
So we went for that walk around Drake's campus where I was a junior at the time. We went for that walk because our pastor had given Gerard the go-ahead. That's why I had asked if it was ok that we go-I wanted to protect myself, when really, others around me already had. I asked what this relationship would look like and he didn't know. I asked what he expected of me and I don't even remember his response. Out of that awkward hour, somehow through our bumbling, a relationship bloomed.
Tonight, we're going for another walk to celebrate 5 years together, 3 years and 9 months married. And Honey, I wouldn't want to walk, fingers intertwined, with anyone else.
Happy Dating Anniversary! :)
