Katy + Wyatt : A Waterworks Engagement Session
“I asked her Dad for his blessing, not his permission. Everyone knows Katy does whatever she wants when she gets a mind to doing it.” This was just the start of our time together as a trio - but I’ve watched Katy grow up over the last 20+ years. She was the blonde tow-head toddler jumping down the stadium steps of Drake’s Blue Oval while her dad rehearsed our marching band ensemble when I was a freshman. Fast forward 15 years when I went to observe her mom direct rehearsals and Katy was all-of-a-sudden the drum major calling the shots. Now, Katy & her fiancé, Wyatt are in teaching positions of their own here in central Iowa and ready to face Forever, together!
What an honor it is to have watched her grow up and now instead of seeing her the adorable toddler in the stands, the bigger honor is photographing her walk down the aisle!
I should’ve known that when I asked them to walk towards me for a few shots that they’d automatically start their march-on cadence for their respective marching bands and be in lock-step with one another! Cue the laughter!
I love that both Katy & Wyatt keep things simple and they are both clear on what they want in their lives together and in their marriage moving forward. We kept their engagement session to Waterworks because we realized that the trees would be in peak bloom the weekend before Drake Relays. “And everyone knows it always rains on the Relays.” So, we just chased the light around the best blooming trees, staying out of other photographers’ way!
I totally pulled the “We’re all done!”-and-then-found-another-great-spot card and I’m so glad I did: (little did we know there were TWO more spots after this one to go!)
My only regret of this photo shoot? Not knowing that Wyatt twirls Katy, apparently “all the time”. I would’ve used that sooner, but we’ll save that nugget more so for their wedding day!
Katy & Wyatt : Thank you so much for entrusting this part of your love story to me and my camera. It’s an honor and a joy to work with you and give these images to you! Best of everything as you wrap up your school years and head into summer to rest, rejuvenate and wrap up the wedding planning!
Take care,
Carrie
